"Woman" (A Tribute to Breast Cancer Awareness & Any Woman Who Experiences "Change")
By: Rebecca Dupas
I am a beautiful woman
not defined by your eyes
but by simply being who and what I am
born to lead
birthed to be a companion to man
a nurturer to my kind
a giving heart and a sound mind
Phenomenal in my stature
your attention captured by the beauty that is
the depth in these eyes
the resilience in my spirit
the bend of my spine
I am forever unbroken
I am nicked but never torn
I am tired but never worn
I fall but I move on
I stumble but stand
might even laugh
look annoyingly at the obstruction in my path
decide to be more careful
but seldom to ever look back
I am a warrior of a woman
a gentle mist or torrential rain
when my family or my passions are threatened by selfish gain
Yet I am peace in the midst of pain
I am truth in the midst of confusion
a sensibility amidst delusion
Call me Queen
Call me Mother
Call me Woman
Honor my feminiity
provide me room to move independently
love me unconditionally
even when my exterior may change
know that the core of who I am remains the same
Some of us run while weary and still refuse to complain
some of us find ourselves on the other side of illness
drowned in sickness that no man can explain
when “why?" is the only question on the edge of our tongues
But we chose a silent persistence
imagine if I stood here minus what you consider an important part of me
Imagine if I allowed you to defined my strength and my beauty
imagine if life's journey took those things away from me
still my spirit remained as it had already been
But you counted me lost because of how you associated it
...with things
treat me as if my soul is made of gold
because it is
regard me as if my heart beats bold
because it is
honor my inner beauty because it is the only thing that I hold
I am a beautiful woman
not defined by your eyes
but by simply being all that I was made to be
Here...
On the inside
