love is a battlefield
Those of you who are around my age may remember a pop artist by the name of Pat Benatar. She had a song that was released in 1983 that was entitled, “Love is A Battlefield”. In my opinion, this was probably one of her most popular songs. The song was a testament to the fact that in situations where feelings are involved, people don’t always conduct themselves in a rational way. They may act out of character in anger or in sadness. They may also make decisions that don’t make sense to anyone accept the individuals directly involved in the situation. The video for the song was nominated for an MTV Music Video Award for best female video. She also won a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Personally, the song writer should have gotten an award for best lyrics. Still to this day, I love this song and the video. The words completely depict the depth of the nature of love. 1Chorinthians 13:4-8 tells us that love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails, but where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. According to another verse in Ephesians, love is gentle and humble as well. Love is not self-serving in any way. Many people confuse love with infatuation. Infatuation usually occurs during the beginning of a relationship. It refers to the attraction and passion that is felt for the other person. Infatuation is selfish and usually a short lived crush. Love is the intense affection felt for a mate. This usually occurs over a long period of time. Love is the concept that causes us to fight to revive or continue a relationship. Love creates intimacy, security, and a desire to please and help the other person. Love causes selflessness and polite assertiveness. Infatuation is only euphoric like a drug and it’s temporary. It also causes people to become reckless. There are some people that actually prefer infatuation over love because they are so self-absorbed that the option to easily detach seems more attractive. Those of us that prefer a deeper commitment just know and understand love conquers all and we must work hard to grow it and sustain it in a healthy manner. As I read the lyrics to “Love Is a Battlefield”, I reflect and ask myself a question. Was it really love or. . . . . . . .
We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield
Woah, we are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
You're making me, you're making me stay
Why do you hurt me so bad?
It would help me to know
Do I stand in your way, or am I the best thing you've had?
Believe me, believe me, I can't tell you why
But I'm trapped by your love, and I'm chained to your side
We are young
Heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
And if I'm losing control will you turn me away or touch me deep inside?
And before this gets old, will it still feel the same?
There's no way this could die
But if we get much closer, I could lose control
And if your heart surrenders, you'll need me to hold
We are young
Heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
We are young
Heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield
Woah, we are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
You're making me, you're making me stay
Why do you hurt me so bad?
It would help me to know
Do I stand in your way, or am I the best thing you've had?
Believe me, believe me, I can't tell you why
But I'm trapped by your love, and I'm chained to your side
We are young
Heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
And if I'm losing control will you turn me away or touch me deep inside?
And before this gets old, will it still feel the same?
There's no way this could die
But if we get much closer, I could lose control
And if your heart surrenders, you'll need me to hold
We are young
Heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
We are young

No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
